This is an audio recording of a teleconference I did with my friend Hagop Tchaparian on Thursday, May 13th.
Hagop is a music industry consultant who’s managed and consulted numerous acts including the band Hot Chip. He got his start as the guitarist for the band Symposium who went from playing to virtually no one (scroll down the page to see the photo!) to playing huge shows and opening up for bands like Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. On the call we talk about Hagop’s Niche Music System which is a method that he developed on his way to success with his own band and which he’s updated and refined in his experience as a manager and consultant for other successful acts.
Hagop gives some great practical and actionable tips on the call which you can use right away. So just click the ‘PLAY AUDIO’ link below to hear the call. All of the links that we refer to on the call are posted at the bottom of the page.

This was a good conference. Did not know he was a Manager too… Nice to know that. It’s a good night of chatting… Designing a strategy with good ideas about selling out venues and getting tours. Thanks for that tip and the importance of niches, and other countries that have great special Labels where they created a network so as to be with fundamental people in the diff parts of the World. Know where we belong is what i take from this…3 prong approach.
I heard Lalapalooza also had Odwalla sponsor bands and small Student Films in a Tent (with A/C) and free craft service. That is a welcome thing too. Taking care of ones fans thru a sponsor. Cheers.

Fantastic stuff guys!
I’m a music 2.0 web professional myself, and I actually learned a new trick listening to this…the Yahoo Site Explorer.
Killer.
Cheers from Thorny Bleeder Records in Vancouver!

Thanks this gave me some great tips for trying to find more people online who might dig my music. What I struggle with is defining the genre of my music, beyond fairly pat categories like alternative or alt-folk so the idea of tracking back to mentions of similar sounding artists is a very good one. Nick Cave anyone?
